Water Balloons for Large Groups – The Sane Way

Water Balloon GameWater balloons are a heap of fun on a hot summer’s day. But how do you avoid the chaos of a free-for-all? (Although that has it’s place, too.) If you’re looking for a water balloon game that has a little bit of structure and control, but still a whole pile of fun – here’s a water balloon game that is sane, safe, and yes, very soggy.

This game has its origins in a camp setting, so I’ll explain it in that context – though you can easily adapt it to fit your situation.

The Thespian Games

By some, this activity is loved. By some, this activity is dreaded. Either way, this is a fun olympic-style competition that puts everyone on an even playing field. The basic idea is to have a series of about twelve events that each team will try to earn points at within a certain time limit. So for example, if you have twelve events and six teams, each team starts at a different event that they will do for three minutes. At the end of the three minutes, they report to the score keeper and then rotate to the next event.

Phong Tag

No – it’s not a typo. I really do mean ‘Phong‘ not ‘phone’. This game is hilarious. Everyone gets one leg of an old nylon. Pour in about a 1/4 cup of flour into the nylon and let it settle down to the toe. By holding on to the open end of the nylon, you now have a tagging device that can reach up to six feet when it stretches with momentum as you swing it around. Even better yet, it also allows you to eliminate all questions of whether or not someone was tagged – as each time someone gets hit, it will leave a white phong mark visible to all. You can incorporate this with regular tag, frozen tag, capture the flag, steal the gold, or just about any ‘tagging’ game you can think of.

Steal the Gold

This game appeals to all types of players. There is sneaking through the bush, running full-tilt from pursuers, guarding the home base, scattering from the approaching super soakers. Whatever their style, this game has it.

Setup

You will need a large playing area including both field and bush. This area will be divided into two equal halves with pylons. Within each half, you will mark off two squares about 20 ft. sq. each. One square should be in the field, the other in the bush. Within each square there will be a bucket of gold (yellow painted rocks) – enough for about 1 per player per bucket. You will also need super soakers (or some other type of water shooting device) and bucket of water for refilling.
